A 39-year-old chartered accountant from Pune lost Rs 2.2 lakh through a SIM card fraud. The fraudsters had implicated the female CA in the name of upgrading their 3G SIM to 4G. He cloned the woman's SIM card and transferred the money from the bank account.

A man called the woman as an employee of the telecom company. The caller said that she (CA) is using a 3G SIM card, which will not be discontinued if not upgraded to 4G. The caller took all the details from the woman and sent a 20 digit number. The fraudster asked the woman to click on that number. On clicking, the SIM card got blocked and the fraudster cloned another SIM card on the same number and accessed the bank accounts.

What is sim card fraud

This is called SIM cloning or SIM swap. In this, hackers block your SIM and activate the same number with them. If your number is linked to bank accounts then the hackers get the benefit. They ask for an OTP on the cloned SIM and empties your bank accounts.
How to avoid SIM card fraud

Usually, fraudsters implicate you in the name of sim card upgrade, network improvement, or another telecom service. In such a situation, it would be better not to give your information to any unknown. If you also want to upgrade the SIM card, do so by visiting the official store. Also do not click on the link sent from an unknown number.
